Born Harvey Lee Yeary on April 23, 1939, in Wyandotte, Michigan, Lee Majors experienced early hardship losing both parents in separate accidents before turning two. His aunt and uncle adopted him; he grew up in Middlesboro, Kentucky. In high school, Majors excelled in athletics and received a scholarship to Indiana University then moved to Eastern Kentucky University. His collegiate football career was cut short by a serious back injury, which drove him toward acting.
Transition to Acting
Majors moved to Los Angeles after earning a degree in history and physical education in 1962 and worked as a recreation director. Inspired by James Dean’s agent, he studied acting and took on the stage name Lee Majors, so paying tribute to football player Johnny Majors.
